Tax Policy

A clear explanation of how sales tax is calculated on every propane tank and reservoir we sell, why the rate changes by province, and who qualifies for a tax exemption.

Why This Page Exists

Straightforward tax, no surprises at checkout.

Propane Reservoirs sells and ships propane tanks, above-ground reservoirs, and related equipment to homeowners, contractors, and businesses across Canada. Because Canadian sales tax is set by each province rather than a single national rate, the tax you're charged depends on where your order is delivered or installed — not on where our yard is located.

This page explains exactly how that works, what rate applies in your province, and how tax-exempt buyers (resellers, First Nations purchasers, and registered businesses) can complete a compliant, tax-exempt purchase with us.

If anything on this page doesn't match what you see at checkout or on your invoice, call our team directly at (506) 805-1354 and we'll walk through it with you line by line.

Why customers trust our billing

  • Registered with the Canada Revenue Agency to collect and remit GST/HST
  • Every invoice itemizes tank price, delivery, and each applicable tax line
  • Tax is calculated automatically at checkout using your delivery address
  • Business Number available on request for verification
  • Based in The Nation, Ontario — a real yard, a real team, a real phone number
How It Works

How we calculate sales tax on your order

Step 1

We use your delivery province, not our location

Canadian sales tax law requires the seller to charge tax based on where the goods are delivered or the place of supply — typically your shipping or installation address. A tank shipped to Alberta is taxed at Alberta's rate, even though our yard is in Ontario.

Step 2

Tax is shown before you pay

Whether you're ordering online or over the phone, the applicable GST, HST, or PST/QST is calculated and displayed as a separate line item before you confirm payment — never bundled invisibly into the tank price.

Step 3

Provinces with two taxes show two lines

In British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, GST and the provincial tax (PST or QST) are separate charges administered by two different governments, so your receipt will list both individually.

Step 4

Your invoice keeps the full breakdown

Every invoice and Merchant Center order confirmation includes the pre-tax price, delivery/installation charges, and each tax line separately, so your records are ready for accounting, warranty claims, or resale.

Exemptions

Tax-exempt & reseller purchases

Some customers are legally entitled to purchase without paying GST/HST or provincial tax at the time of sale. We're set up to handle each of the following:

Status Indian & First Nations purchasers

Under CRA rules, GST/HST relief may apply on qualifying purchases delivered to a reserve, or purchased in person and presented with a valid Certificate of Indian Status. Provide your status card at the time of order so we can apply the exemption correctly on your invoice.

Registered resellers & wholesale accounts

Propane dealers, contractors, and retailers purchasing tanks for resale can provide a valid resale certificate or GST/HST registration number to purchase without tax being charged at the point of sale, in accordance with CRA input tax credit rules.

Provincial sales tax (PST/QST) exemptions

In PST and QST provinces (BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec), certain business and farm purchases may qualify for a provincial exemption separate from GST. These exemptions are administered by the provincial tax authority, not the CRA, and require the applicable provincial exemption certificate.

How to submit your exemption documentation

Email your certificate or status number to our sales team before your order ships, or bring it with you if picking up locally. Exemptions cannot be applied retroactively to an already-completed transaction, so please submit documentation before checkout.

Common Questions

Tax policy FAQ

Why was I charged a different tax rate than my home province's posted rate?

Tax is calculated using the delivery or installation address for your order, not your billing address or where you're browsing from. If you're having a tank shipped to a different province than where you live, the destination province's rate applies.

Do I pay tax on delivery and installation charges, or just the tank itself?

In most provinces, delivery and installation charges tied to a taxable sale are taxed at the same rate as the tank itself. Your invoice will show tax calculated across the full order total, with each component listed separately.

I'm a licensed propane contractor. Can I buy tanks without paying tax?

Yes, if you provide a valid resale certificate or your GST/HST registration number before your order is invoiced. Send your documentation to our sales team in advance so the exemption can be applied correctly at checkout rather than requiring a refund afterward.

Does Propane Reservoirs charge tax on out-of-province or export orders?

Orders delivered within Canada are taxed according to the destination province's rate. For questions about a specific delivery scenario, including remote or cross-border delivery, call us before ordering and we'll confirm exactly how your order will be taxed.

Can I get a copy of my invoice with the full tax breakdown for my accountant?

Yes. Every order includes a detailed invoice showing the pre-tax price, delivery charges, and each applicable tax line. If you need a duplicate copy or a formal receipt reissued, call our office and we'll send one right away.

Is this page legal or accounting advice?

No. This page explains how Propane Reservoirs applies sales tax to purchases made through our business. It is not a substitute for advice from a licensed accountant or tax professional regarding your own tax obligations. For guidance specific to your situation, please consult the Canada Revenue Agency or a qualified tax advisor.

Have a question about tax on your order?

Our team can walk through your invoice line by line, or help you submit exemption paperwork before you check out.
